| Description |
This Chinesco style figure is made with fired
hollow clay. The surface of the clay is
charmingly enhanced with light orange color
decoration. Even her skirt is enhanced with
orange color pattern. The small female figure
stands innocently, with its charming Chinesco
facial features such as small slit-eyes, mouth,
and a flat face. Although such marks are just
indication of facial features, they are
fascinatingly engaging. Such engaging nature of
the features creates a mystical quality to this
small, almost doll-like figure. Found from a
shaft tomb, this clay figure holds a special
ceremonial significance. Perhaps the figure was
a symbolic, ritual offering in the late-pre-classic
ceremony in Nayarit. Not only is the standing
female figure a rendition of human figure but it
is also a depiction of Ancient Meso-American
spiritual belief and practice.
