Ancient artisans in the state of Nayarit, located
in the west coast region of Mexico, produced a
stunning array of art in clay. Specializing in lively
and expressive figures, much of the simple
everyday life of ancient Mexico can be gleaned
from the work of these highly prolific craftsmen.
Here, a seated male figure is rendered in the
Nayarit "Chinesco" style, so named because of
the figure's facial features--'small slanted,
almond-shaped eyes that combine with high
cheekbones to convey a vaguely oriental feeling.
A long pointed nose, adorned with an ornament,
a highly expressive mouth and decorative facial
paint add to this individual's distinctive visage.
With back hunched over and thin folded arms
resting on bent knees, he appears in a pensive,
meditative pose. We can only wonder what deep
and distant thoughts were going through the
mind of the ancient Nayarit artist who created
this masterpiece of soulful sculpting. While the
artist's thoughts may be elusive, lost in time
forever, the fruits of his labor continue to
express themselves today through this
beautifully poetic work of art.
