This strikingly painted figure, sculpted from clay,
is a delightful example of the art produced
centuries ago in the Mexican state of Nayarit,
located in the western region of the country.
Specializing in bold and spirited images, at once
handsome and distinctive in appearance, this
particular figure is rendered by an ancient
Nayarit artist in the Chinesco style, so named
because of the figures characteristic facial
features small slanted, almond shaped eyes that
combine with high cheekbones to convey an
exotic oriental feeling. A heart shaped head,
disproportionately large nose with an ornamental
nose clip and dynamic facial painting add a
further note of character to his appearance. With
back hunched over and thin folded arms resting
comfortably on bent knees, he appears in a
relaxing, restful posture. His slight, upturned
mouth hinting at thoughts of amusement, this
splendid individual evinces a mood of enjoyment,
his buoyant spirit affecting us in a most
appealing manner.
