| Description |
The small pouch this intriguing figure wears was
intended to hold the hallucinogen peyote. For
thousands of years the native peoples of the
Americas used this natural drug to induce ritual
visions. In West Mexico, the use of such drugs
was closely associated with passage into the
realm of the spirits. Wide-eyed and open-
mouthed, this fellow seems deep in the throes of
a powerful vision. Lost to the world around him
he appears to stare into the very heart of the
unknown. As we gaze upon him today, we
recognize that there are questions man has yet
to answer.
