| Description |
Centuries ago, some prominent citizen of
Ancient Mexico placed this figure in a tomb to
act in his place through eternity. Symbolic of
sadness and mourning, the effigy stood in proxy
for the person whose gift it was. Though that
individual has long-since vanished, his memory
survives in this striking figure. Rendered with
abstract simplicity, the figure nonetheless
conveys a remarkable human melancholy, as if
he were lost in a reverie. We remember that
ancient donor, and are connected in an intimate
way with his vanished world and with the human
emotions that moved it.
