This beautifully glazed jug is identified as Persian
monochrome glazed fritware. The granular base
clay
is a buff color, covered by a white slip, then a
brilliant turquoise glaze. The turquoise glaze
covers
the whole of the interior as well as the exterior of
the piece almost to the foot rim. The foot rim and
base of the jar are unglazed. The glaze and slip
are
slightly unevenly applied, and pool thickly near
the
bottom of the jar - a characteristic of this type of
pottery.
A geometric pierced decoration surrounds the
whole
body.
The jug was probably made in Kashan between
the
12th and 13th centuries - the clay, glaze and form
being characteristic of ceramic pieces of that
area
and time frame.
