This magnificent tetradrachm evokes the splendor and richness of the Hellenistic age. A member of the Macedonian aristocracy, Lysimachus was among the inner circle that divided up the kingdom of Alexander the great after his death. To emphasize his lifelong friendship with Alexander, Lysimachus adorned his own coinage with a portrait of the deified king, wearing the horns of the Egyptian God Ammon. On the other side is the image of Athena, classical goddess of wisdom and war.
