Most probably, this cameo image portrays one of the women of the Antonine Dynasty, perhaps Faustina the Younger or her daughter Lucilla. In Ancient Rome, the women of the imperial family were treated like media stars. Their portraits were scattered throughout the empire, as symbols of their high rank and to further the dynastic ambitions of the families in power. Very possibly, this gem was given as a mark of intimate favor from the sitter herself. As we slip it onto our finger today, we are connected directly with the life of the person who first wore this cameo centuries ago. - (FJ.4851)
