Description |
This genunine antique Classical Revival hematite
seal has been mounted in a modern 18 karat
gold ring.
Gem engraving is a miniaturistic art form
whereby designs are cut into or on the surface of
a gem. Intaglios, gemstones with an incised
design below the surface of the gem, were made
as early as the fourth and third millennia B.C. In
Mesopotamia and the Aegean. However, it was in
ancient Greece and Rome that the expressive and
aesthetic language of gem engraving was truly
born. The classic artisans carried engraving to an
artistic level higher than ever seen before,
borrowing their diverse themes from epic poetry
and famous legends of gods and heroes.
In this stunning hematite intaglio, created during
the later classical revival period, we see
exceptional beauty and artistry in the depiction
of the bust of a roman empress, complete with a
diadem and elaborate hairdo. Upon closer
examination of the empress' hairstyle, we notice
that a portion of hair is imaginatively formed into
the beautiful image of a swan's neck and head.
The bird's graceful neck curves softly upward,
joining the delicate head and beak which rest
atop the head of the empress. The skill and
imagination that is revealed in this stunning
hematite intaglio is truly a testament to a grand
tradition that dates back thousands of years. The
wearer of this exquisite intaglio, mounted in its
radiant gold ring setting, will most certainly
experience a spirited connectedness with that
ancient tradition, and a feeling of regal beauty
that equals the intrinsic beauty of this
extraordinary work of art.
