This spectacular gold pendant bas a symmetrical, yet very dynamic design, in which a monkey figure is seated on a swing-like "throne". The throne terminates into two beautiful swirl scrolls and an applied gold dot. Both bands hold onto either side of the throne and a very elaborate pectoral graces his upper chest. The forehead is rather prominent and has two swirl scrolls on either Bide of the face. Underneath applied sliteyes and nose, a wide open smile unveils ferocious fangs. Monkeys were particularly important in Central American mythology because they so closely resembled humans and because, as both ground and arboreal dwellers, they linked the land with the forests. This gold masterpiece which silently shimmers in all its glory and mystery before us is undoubtedly an exceptional work of art. It combines the powerful forces of artistic ingenuity with supernatural and mythical imagery. Such an extraordinary pendant was certainly worn by a person of high rank and authority in society.
