This intaglio is set in an 18 karat gold ring.
A beautiful young woman is playing a lyre, the
instrument of the god Apollo. Her left knee is
bent as she leans against a pillar for support.
The folds of her dress fall seductively around her,
leaving a shoulder and breast bare. A small
figure on top of the pillar seems to be dancing to
the music, and nearly about to fall off! Such
gentle and charming scenes from ancient life
were particularly popular with aristocrats of the
18th century, who employed the finest engravers
to create intaglios worthy of an emperor.
