Description |
Olmec mythology is filled with fantastic beings,
freakish monsters who seem to survive from a
more chaotic age before men and beasts took
separate identities. This is a particularly
fascinating example--a creature with a distorted
human head, a bloated body, and a powerful tail
like a kangaroo. The iconographic significance of
this figure has vanished from memory, but the
image continues to perturb, to challenge our
complacent explanations of the human past.
