Even its fragmentary state cannot disguise the
masterful energy of this painted vase. Cylinder
vases provide a fascinating glimpse into the
Mayan empire at its height. They record the
rituals, ceremonies and myths that were at the
core of aristocratic Mayan life. This vividly
painted vessel depicts a seated dignitary,
wearing an elaborate feathered headdress, who
holds a sacrificial object. Above and behind him,
painted glyphs record the proceedings. The
artist has used a bold palette of yellow and
orange which lends a barbarous spendor to the
scene. As we gaze upon it, we are transported
backward into a mysterious, vanished world.
