The image of the human figure has been a great
source of fascination since the beginning of time
for every culture known. Yet expression remains
key to the character of the piece. This glazed
earthenware piece demonstrates the complexity
of the expression and the effect it has when it is
properly accomplished. The squatting position
illustrates a Shaman, a man of high power and
position within society. All the adornments, such
as the headpiece, nose ring, armlets and earrings
continue to exemplify his importance. Though
anatomical correctness is not essential in such
pieces, expression is. The enigmatic smile,
elongated nose accentuating the smile and wide,
almond shaped eyes all suggest extreme
alertness and wisdom, for which he would have
been known and greatly revered. The material
from which the sculpture was made also
suggests strength from within, yet a familiarity
as well, making people throughout the ages feel
comfortable.
