Description |
The central upper panel of this icon shows the representation of Christ's mystical elevation before God the Father, surrounded by angels, doves (Holy Spirit) and two lions. The panels below show in clockwise order, the baptism of the baby Jesus; His baptism by St. John; Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem; and His glorification in Heaven. On the top section of the right panel we see the installation of the cross, with the surrounding architecture and ornamentation in the style of medieval Russia. Below, is depicted the Resurrection, Christ's glorification in heaven, death of the Virgin Mary, and her enthronement in heaven. The Crucifixion occupies the central theme of the left panel. Below is the mystical annunciation, birth of Jesus, His entrance into the temple, and scenes from the life of the Holy Family. This fine icon combines rigorous artistic skill with a natural piety in a work that is both intimate and vast in its proclamation of the Christian faith.
