On the upper register Christ is seen seated on a decorated throne with His mother the Virgin Mary on His right, and St. John the Baptist (the "Forerunner") on His left. The bottom panel shows four busts of saints each with their arms folded over their chests. In similar enthronement scenes Christ is typically shown holding the Holy Bible while making a sign of blessing. Both the Virgin and St. John bow their heads in reverence. This simple and moving presentation is given some ornamentation at the top in the style of 11th Century Russian-Byzantine decoration. Though the faces are smooth from age and the touch of the pious, the power from this icon is much larger than its size; reminding us of the ability art possesses to transcend time and space. - (PF.5207)
