T. Flavius Domitianus was the younger son of
Vespasian and Flavia Domitilla and was born in
Rome in A.D. 51. During the reigns of his father
and brother Domitian was kept very much in the
background, but on the death of Titus his
succession w as not disputed. At first he showed
great promise, but he w as very unpopular with
the senatorial nobility and this resulted in
numerous plots and conspiracies. Domitian, who
was suspicious by nature, reacted violently, and
the last years of his reign were ones of terror and
oppression. He was eventually murdered on
September 18th, 96 A.D., as the result of a
palace plot involving his wife, Domitia, his
chamberlain and the Praetorian prefect.
