As the mask glistens silently before us, we come
to realize what attracted the Mayan people to
jade. The rareness of its light gray color
emphasizes the subtle contours of the face that
the artist was so careful to include in his work of
art. With these contours, the mask remains
completely smooth to the touch, creating a feast
for the eyes as well as the fingers. Though the
size is small, it allows the mask to be filled with
expression. The eyes are wide and seemingly
innocent. The nose, though prominent, equalizes
the protruding lips and the long, narrow ears.
Without any inscriptions, the mask seems to
speak a thousand words of greatness, power and
immortality. Such apiece deserves to be
treasured and respected for many years to come,
because it has indeed, through its many travels,
become immortal.
