An elegantly robed goddess, in Classical
contrapposto position, is shown holding a tablet.
Her identity is something of a mystery, though
traditionally Nike, the goddess of victory, is
depicted writing on a tablet. Molded terracotta
sculptures like this were created throughout the
ancient world, and offered in vast numbers as
votives. What favors might the person who left
this gift have been seeking? A life full of success
and happiness? Are these things so very different
from what we would wish for today? In the
presence of this elegant fragment, we recognize
the eternal elements in human nature.
