It is one of the miracles of art that we can come face to face with people who lived centuries ago. Occasionally an artist can render an expression that is so intimate we feel an instant rapport with the person portrayed. This head contains that unique charm. It is of a man who appears to be in his twenties. His beard is carefully groomed, as is his hair. The lips are small, the upper portion cleverly worked in with the moustache. It is, however, his eyes which captivate us. What is the expression? Is he wistful, contemplative, sorrowful or a dreamy young man thinking of his love. In certain angles of light, crystal in the stone glitter, adding to the romantic idea. In any case, the skill of the sculptor in rendering such variety of emotions will keep us guessing. - (PF.4458)
