Description
The art of the Cameroon tends to be centered around the Fon or king, used as objects of prestige, wealth and power. High ranking dignitaries also utilized statuary to designate position in society; the number of objects, materials, and iconography changing in proportion to the person's particular status. Competition among artist was intense, each vying with the other to create the most dramatic and beautiful objects. This remarkable statue shows a warrior-hunter holding a spear with the right hand, and the left hand holding onto a quiver which is attached to a wide textured strap over the shoulder. The loincloth is very thick and given considerable realistic detail. There is feeling of friendliness from this figure, and also contrasting sense of strength and virility suitable to a noble hunter. - (PF.4906)
