Description
Seated on top of a pin, much like an ornate column, the figure appears to be in a state of bondage. The elongated arms are pressed tightly against the sides of the body, with the hands tucked under the "perch." Feet are joined together, though the knees are spread apart. On his head is an interesting headdress or cap comprised of four "braided" bands down the sides, back and front of the head. The eyes are coffee-bean shaped and appear to be closed. Most significant is the bulbous object protruding from the mouth; which might be a type of ornament, or a means of keeping a prisoner quiet. The pin itself has a lovely twirling upper portion which gives movement and texture to the entire object. Whether the figure was a prisoner taken in battle, or a depiction of someone involved in a ritual practice; the artistry and beautiful symmetry of the pin is what makes it special. - (PF.5020)
