th
Century AD Dimensions:14.5" (36.8cm) high x 1.625" (4.1cm) wide Collection: African Medium: Ivory
The hierarchical system found amongst the Lulua
tribe is finely depicted within this marvelous
piece sculpted with precision and care. The
carvings are of animal figures and symbols. This
trumpet was most likely used to announce the
arrival or departure of the queen or of a female
chieftain. The carving on this trumpet is truly
fascinating in its rendering of the intricate design
on the face. The large facial features are
majestic and bold, suiting the regal status that
this person holds. The woman's face is serene
and captivating. The scarification around her
mouth and the beautiful patterned design down
her neck is impressive. These qualities along
with the sheer craftsmanship makes one
overcome with the sensation that this woman
was highly respected. Below the woman's bust
are two lizards going in opposite directions
symbolizing maternity. To finish off this
incredible work of art, the bottom of the trumpet
is carved with a tribal pattern of criss crosses.
Today we are still able to appreciate the aesthetic
beauty of the trumpet and symbolism, along with
the crucial cultural role it played in the
community of Lulua.
