What is confronting us? How can explain such an extraordinary object? At first our senses are on alert, as if threatened, until we learn that this beautifully carved work was an essential part of life and crucial to the well being of the people. It represents a warrior who has defeated not only one but two enemies in battle. This has a double significance for these "trophy" heads were intended as offerings for a good harvest. Though he is truly a formidable warrior, his stance is quite gentle in this humble offering to the unknown forces that control nature. He asks us to join with him, in fact to accept his gifts, challenging our conventions and beliefs and in this act links us to a vanished world. - (PF.4435)
