Description
This seated mother radiates warmth and love for the small child she clutches at her side. Her raccoon eyes, long pointed nose and orange slip pants give her an almost comical presence. She is rendered in the ‘Chinesco’ style, so named because of her characteristic facial features— small slanted eyes, a triangle-shaped head and high cheekbones that convey a clear oriental touch. It was traditional in Ancient Mexico to place ceramic figures and vessels in the shafts tombs along with the deceased; a Nayarit artist created this decorated mother figure with that purpose in mind. With her small child securely at her side she is a Universal reminder of both femininity and fertility. - (PF.2781)
