This beautiful figure is a perfect example of the
excellent work that is found in the Benin region.
The piece is made out of smooth ivory and
stained to create a deep red-brown appearance.
The King or Oba holds a vessel of some kind in
his hands, which gives him poise great
symmetry. For jewelry, he wears a large series of
rings on his forearm, his ankles and around his
neck. However, the most impressive part of this
sculpture, is the exquisite head piece which has
been carefully carved into a tall geometric
pattern which reaches a point at the top. The
overall sense of this piece is one of grandeur as
well as of beauty which makes its uniqueness
timeless.
