This charming sculpture depicts a man mounted
on a horse. Riding bareback, he holds the reigns
in one hand and a bifurcated spear in the other.
Presumably a warrior out on the hunt, the rider
also wears a necklace. The spiral pendant falls
backwards along the middle of his back, no
doubt from the momentum of riding. He wears a
belt holding several pouches. These no doubt
contain all the useful tools that are required on
the hunt. This charming sculpture reveals a high
level of artistic sophistication. So much detail
has been fitted onto such a small composition.
The heads of both the figure and the horse have
been greatly exaggerated, as is the custom in
the art of many African tribes. A series of circular
nodules create the texture of the man’s hair and
beards, as well as doubling for his eyes. This
figures represents an ordinary scene of a warrior
venturing out on the hunt. However, it is from
this everyday activity that the village gains
sustenance and nourishment. Thus, this hunters
has been memorialized so that he will continue
to feed the spiritual needs of the village even
after the physical rewards of his efforts have
been consumed.
