In the comparatively peaceful period from the 11th
to the 13th centuries, the powerful patronage of the
Seljuks favoured the development of the arts,
literature and philosophy. Significant developments
occurred under their rule, especially in the
production of metalwork.
Much of Islamic metalwork lies in its surface
decoration. The designs on the bowl of running
hares flanked by medallions, are made using the
repoussé technique which involves hammering the
metal from inside the vessel which creates an
elaborate relief decoration.
