Description |
This marvelous miniature statue perhaps depicts
a Bronze Age hero god like the later Greek
Herakles, a warrior deity, or a king of gods like
Ba'al holding a scepter of office. In spite of his
fearsome weapon, there is something touchingly
human about the otherwise nude figure. It is as if
the ancient culture that created this piece
understood that in the face of the unknown,
even the gods were vulnerable. A remarkable
example of early votive art.
