As the inhabitants of Ancient Costa Rica
increased, fertile lands became scarce and highly
valued stimulating competition. This trophy
head may represent a captured enemy sacrificed
to complete the cycle of agricultural fertility, a
sacred cult in Ancient Costa Rica. His elaborate
rounded coiffure distinguishes him as a person
of high rank. The simple, yet thoughtful
sculptural rendering of this warrior conveys a
powerful solemn character.
