There is an order and a logic to the patterns on
this magnificent vessel, but they are not rigidly
observed. Some straight lines are curved, and
the checkered central motifs vary greatly in size.
It is as if the artist understood that perfection is
predictable and it is the flaws, the little
surprises--in decoration as in life--that hold
our attention.
