Description |
Since the dawn of time, the funerary art of Peru
was concerned with nature, fertility and rebirth.
In ceramics especially, the erotic elements are
often presented in a direct and unblushing
fashion. Here, a classic stirrup handle has been
attached to a stylized penis to form a well-
balanced container. Atop the handle sits a
beautiful monkey, an animal frequently
associated with uninhibited sexuality. Centuries
ago, such a piece would have represented the
hope for the continuity of life; in the modern
age, its significance is still easily understood. HT.
