The upper panel of this icon shows Christ in the
presence of God, with a globe in between, over
which hovers the Holy Spirit in the form of a
dove. Thus, the Holy Trinity is represented within
a separate boundary, as if even the power of
angels is not great enough to enter into this
sacred realm. Below, following clockwise is the
presentation of the infant Jesus at the temple.
The Baptism of Jesus by St. John ("the
Forerunner") marked an important turning point
in His life. In the gospel of Matthew (3: 14-15), a
dialogue between John and Jesus clarifies that
the latter is not baptized because he needs it,
but because both men must fulfill all
righteousness. Below this dramatic scene is
Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, followed by His
Transfiguration. These important moments in
Christ's life, on earth and in heaven, beautifully
set against a pale blue background, present a
collection of vivid images the faithful can
instantly respond to.
