This bowl from the Mexican state of Zacatecas is
a beautiful example of the intricate textile-like
patterns common to the region. The polished
surface of this bowl took days of burnishing to
achieve the soft, silky surface, which made it
acceptable for eating. Turning the bowl over we
are taken by the detailed floral pattern
juxtaposed against the chevron zigzag encircling
the piece. The bowl still retains much of its
richness of color. Was this piece used for the
nobility to dine form or for part of a shamanistic
ritual? The possibilities excite the imagination.
