The Mayan pantheon included a vast number of
gods, some of whose names and functions
remain mysterious even today. Mayan deities
had much in common with their human
counterparts: they fell in love and feasted, they
fought, gave birth, and sometimes they died.
The gods were an integral part of daily life
throughout the Mayan empire, and much of the
art reflects their presence. This striking vessel is
adorned with the image of the deity whose
blessings it was meant to gain. In this charming
guise, the God seems quite accessible, as if
ready to grant any favor a friend might ask of
him. Perhaps we should see if his powers are as
great today as they were in the distant past.
