Taking its central motif from nature, this elegant
textile captures the senses with its abstract
simplicity. In rows alternating left and right, it
depicts a stylized bird with curving beak and
triangular tail. This motif seems the very
essence of a bird, the animal reduced to its most
specific elements. Such an image could be
meant to evoke the abundance of nature, though
the curving beak suggests a bird of prey, a motif
often associated with nobles, warriors, and
kings. In earthy brown against a mustard
background, it achieves richness without
ostentation. Its decorative rhythms appeal as
much to modern sensibilities as they surely did
to those of the Ancient Peruvians.
