There is a surreal air about this figure, who
seems to come from another world completely.
His padded armor most probably identifies him
as a participant in the ritual ballgame, with a
costume designed to intimidate the opposition.
Even after all these centuries, the psychological
advantage is most effective--we can hardly take
our eyes off him.
