The abstract sculptural beauty of this ancient axe
makes it easy to forget that it was originally a
weapon of war. As we admire its purity of line, its
elegant curves, we must also remember the
heated battles in which it took part. If such a
weapon had a voice, what tales it might tell
about war and warriors, about battles won and
lost, about victory and defeat. Though civilization
has invented far more lethal weapons in the
centuries since this axe saw duty, this ancient
blade retains a primal power that has not faded
with time.
