The obverse of this pelike shows the goddess
Athena holding a raised spear preparing to slay a
kneeling warrior. She wears a himation with a wavy
border over a peplos (a heavy, sleeveless tunic worn
by women). Her white skin stands out starkly against
the black of her dress as she lunges with one foot
raised towards the warrior. On the reverse is a
hunting scene showing a hunter carrying a bundle
of spears while riding on a long-legged horse. An
elegant hound looks up at his master as an
attendant comes from behind holding a staff with a
rounded top. This vase is attributed to the Theseus
Painter who was fond of scenes depicting the hero
Theseus and who is also known for his fine animals-
-as is amply demonstrated on this beautiful vase.
