Chavin Blackware Vessel in the Form of a Cherymoia Fruit - K.070 Origin: Northern Coast of Peru Circa: 700
BC
to 300
BC Dimensions:9.25" (23.5cm) high Collection: Pre-Columbian Medium: Terracotta
The Chavin culture had a great appreciation for
the natural world, which is expressed in their art.
This splendid vessel strikes a lovely balance
between naturalism and abstraction, depicting
the textured skin of the cherimoya fruit as if it
were being peeled away. To hold this vessel is to
be aware of contrast: the modern hand delights
in the alternating bands of rough and smooth
just as the ancient hand did so long ago.
