The artist who carved these votives and the
people who offered them as gifts to the gods
seemed aware that the stone would last far
longer than human flesh or human memory.
They set them up to pray perpetually to deites
the world has long forgotten. If, however, we
view these striking objects as symbols for the
aspirations and dreams of the people who
touched them centuries ago, then those ancient
lives continue to survive vividly through them.
