Description |
The top panel of this icon shows the Crucifixion; with the cross occupying the central space; Mary Magdalen and her attendant are at left, St. John and a Roman soldier on the right. God the Father looks down upon the scene, while at the bottom is the skull of Adam resting on the sepulchral ground of Golgotha. Following clockwise is the Annunciation, Baptism of Christ, and his entry into Jerusalem and Christ's transfiguration. This panel was part of a polyptych designed for the "Feast Days and the Exaltation of the Mother of God." The lovely blue enameled background offers greater perspective to the fine artistry, which brings alive crucial events in the life of Christ.
