This impressive figure, costumed in abstract
motifs, radiates an aura of benevolent magic. He
is perhaps a shaman or a priest in the service of
the alligator God, the central deity of the cocle
pantheon. Centuries ago, he was placed in a
tomb to help the deceased enter the realm of the
spirits. With bold, simple lines and lively
painting, the artist has created an image of
enduring power. The progress of civilization has
not dimmed the impact such a work has on the
soul. In its presence we recognize that many
questions about life, death and the nature of the
Universe remain unanswered.
