Description |
Flavius Claudius Constantius, the eldest son of
Constantine the great and his second wife
Fausta, was born in 314 A.D. He was created
Caesar in 317, and at the age of eighteen he
distinguished himself in a campaign against the
Goths. On the division of the empire following
the death of Constantine I, he received Spain,
Gaul and Britain as his sphere of government.
However, he soon quarreled with his younger
brother Constans over the division of the
territories and early in 340, he crossed the Alps
and invaded Italy, only to be killed in an ambush
near Aquileia.
