Description |
A utilitarian object, this chalice has been awarded a more intrinsic value by its being made of bronze rather than other usual examples of terracotta. Such a chalice may have been saved for use in special occasions, or it was meant as a dedication to the gods. It is of a decent size and fits comfortably in the hand. Quite innovative is the raised band around the middle of the body, for this would have stopped drips from flowing down the side of the vessel and onto the table. Its proportions are pleasing, and the slender foot gives it a gentle appearance.
