Though the cross is one of the simplest of
forms, it is probably the most poignant. For
Christians and non-Christians alike, the cross is
synonymous with Jesus Christ. The fact that an
instrument of death was turned into a symbol of
spiritual liberation is a phenomenon in its own
right. This is especially true for the faithful, and
the Byzantine age is famous for producing the
extremes of fanaticism and profound piety. This
cross is the essence of simple purity and
refinement, proclaiming its beauty without
embellishment. The slight curve of the edges is
characteristic of Byzantine style; as is the
indentation of the center section which gives the
effect of being in relief. It is a deeply moving
symbol speaking loudly through the ages with a
gentle whisper of humility and eternal faith.
