Description
This fascinating mask depicts an aristocratic male, perhaps Xipe, Mayan God of fertility and vegetation. Too small to be worn, and without eyeholes, it clearly was intended for some votive or ceremonial function. Perhaps it was hung on the wall of an ancient temple in hopes of winning the favor of the God. What hopes and dreams does it embody? From such clues as this, we may gaze upon the face of a vanished world. - (PF.1906)
