| Description |
This splendid textile depicts, in two identical
tiers, one of the central themes of Chimu textile
art: frontal figures surrounded by jungle birds
and monkeys. Scholars are uncertain as to the
exact meaning of this motif; some believe it
represents a God, or a priest dressed as a God,
while others propose it is a depiction of a
specific Chimu king. Clearly, as the presence of
the animals suggests, this is an individual
possessing a great power over nature. The
palette is simple, but the colors are rich: brilliant
scarlet, earthy sienna, and warm ochre. Such a
work, a masterpiece of Chimu weaving, may once
have hung in a palace. Wherever it hangs today,
it is certain to enhance its surrounding s with its
aura of stately beauty.
