| Description |
Divination is an essential element of Meso-
American religious life. Throughout Meso-
American mythology, there are many references
to the goddess of diviners. This noble woman
who now stands before us certainly could
represent such a Goddess. Her aura radiates
wisdom to all even after the many centuries
which have passed. Her expression is pragmatic,
logical and foretelling. Years of foretelling the
future or the unknown have created her sharp,
intelligent physiognomy. The ancient artist has
skillfully chiseled these astute features in the
beautifully burnished brown clay. A woman of
honor and insight, she is certainly fit to be the
goddess of diviners. There are remarkable
incised geometric designs covering her. The
designs may represent predictions concerning
the future or have specific religious or political
connotation. The incisions have been richly
preserved for our enjoyment and admiration
today. Bracelets adorn her wrists and she wears
a short skirt. During divination ceremonial
rituals and festivities, this ancient figurine was
likely to have been set on an altar along with
other sacred and significant relics. She stands
before us as a witness of long forgotten
predictions of the future that we can only
imagine became true by her confident
countenance. We must not also ignore the
fertility attributes of this goddess.
