In the burial context for which they were meant,
such vivid evocations of worldy pleasure are an
affirmation of life, and a promise of its
continuity. The ancient cultures of West Mexico
took a direct and unblinking appraoch to human
sexualilty. They did not fear it and they did not
smirk at it, realizing--as the post-Victorian
world seems only able to do with difficulty--that
it is a central focus in a balanced world.
